Cacao Beet Smoothie

I love chocolate.

I love and will gladly eat most vegetables. I love and will east most fruits too. I can take away the gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, cane sugar, coffee, pork, seafood, and specific nuts and seeds as I had to this summer, but please, please, please do not take away my chocolate! 

I typically work out in the morning- hello 6:00 a.m. class! - so making a smoothie is the first thing I do when I get home to restore and get my day started. Cacao powder is the raw, unroasted and unsweetened powder of the cacao bean. High in antioxidants, cacao in a natural stimulant that will give you clean energy and releases the happy chemicals in your brain. Because it's unsweetened, it also allows you to control the amount of sugar you're using which is specifically great in the morning when you don't want to crash later. 

Beets, on the other hand, provide a sweetness and a grounding feeling. They support blood circulation, act as an anti-inflammatory and provide an excellent source of calcium and iron. While it wasn't my initial intention, ladies, this smoothie would provide needed relief time of the month as well.

Tasting a cross between red velvet cake and a chocolate shake, this will keep you satisfied and your body singing for hours later.

cacao beet avocado smoothie

2 cups liquid (I use a mix of cashew milk and water, but any nut milk, kefir or dairy milk will work)
1/4 avocado (1/2 frozen banana)
1/2 small beet (about 1.5 ounces)
1 date
1 tablespoon lucuma (or another 1/2 date. omit if using banana)
2 tablespoons cacao
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 serving of your favorite protein powder (Sprout Living, Vital Proteins or Beauti-fuel are my favorites)
2-3 ice cubes

I also added 1/2 teaspoon each ashwagandha and cordyceps from Sun Potion for an extra boost. These are completely optional.

Add all of the ingredients into a blender, putting the ice cubes in last. Blend until smooth.
